SAYHUSH FIELD NOTES

Pause and resume dictation on Mac without inserting your draft

By · Reviewed

Pause is different from stop

Pause keeps your draft open while turning off microphone capture. Stop finishes the draft and attempts to insert it into the original text field. In Sayhush, the left dock button pauses or resumes; the right button stops and inserts. Tapping the keyboard shortcut again also stops.

Start hands-free

Click your destination, then tap Control–Option–Space. You do not need to hold the keys. The small dock appears at the bottom center of the display where you started, above the Dock. Wait for Listening before speaking. A custom shortcut can be selected in Settings.

Take a break

Click Pause. The app stops collecting new audio and finishes transcribing the segment already recorded. During Pausing, wait for finalization; Resume becomes available when the state changes to Paused. The app does not keep sending silence during the break. Previously captured speech may still be processing briefly after you click.

Continue your thought

Click Resume and continue when listening starts again. Resume opens a new transcription segment and combines its text with the existing draft. It requires the service to be reachable and enough minutes to continue. Speech during the paused interval is not captured or recoverable.

Finish once

Tap the shortcut again or click Stop. The combined text is inserted once if the original field and selection are still available. Do not move to another document while waiting. If automatic insertion cannot safely happen, use Copy Latest Transcript. Escape cancels without inserting, so use Stop when you want to keep the draft.

Try a two-part draft

For a disposable test note, say “The first idea is a shorter introduction.” Click Pause and think silently. Resume and say “The second idea is a clearer example.” Stop when finished. Review that both thoughts appear in a single draft. This is a suggested test script, not a recorded recognition result; punctuation and wording can vary.

Know the limits

This workflow is for personal dictation, not continuous recording of calls or meetings. Recordings are limited to five minutes. A pause is useful for thinking or a brief interruption, but a paused draft is not a durable saved document. Finish and review important writing rather than relying on an open dock overnight.
