SAYHUSH FIELD NOTES

How to change your Sayhush dictation shortcut on Mac

By · Reviewed

Change the shortcut in Sayhush Settings while no recording is active. Choose your modifiers and key, click Apply shortcut, and test in a disposable note. The tap/hold setting changes how that shortcut behaves.

Choose the action before the keys

First decide whether you want tap-to-toggle or hold-to-talk. With tap enabled, one press starts recording and another finishes and inserts the draft. With it off, hold the combination while speaking and release to finish. A shortcut that feels comfortable for a tap may feel awkward to hold. Try both with a short sentence rather than choosing from the label alone.

Set the combination in Settings

Finish or cancel any recording, open Settings, and find Recording. Choose Control, Option, Command or a combination of those modifiers; Shift is optional. Select Space, D, F8 or F9 in the Key picker, then click Apply shortcut. The current release offers these keys, not an arbitrary shortcut recorder. At least one of Control, Option or Command must be selected. Settings changes are unavailable while recording.

Use a repeatable first test

Click an empty note and tap the new combination once. Wait for Listening, say “This shortcut starts my draft,” then tap again. Verify that the dock closes and text reaches the same field. This sentence is a suggested test, not a guaranteed recognition result. If you selected hold mode, use a single press-and-hold followed by release instead. A quick tap in hold mode is not the same test.

Resolve one conflict at a time

If another app opens or a system action runs, the combination may already be in use. Check the shortcut settings of that app before choosing a different combination in Sayhush. Avoid replacing a familiar command such as Copy or Undo. Record the old and new combinations in a note so you can reverse the change. Do not reset every keyboard preference to diagnose one conflict.

Separate shortcut problems from permission problems

If the dock appears, the start shortcut has reached Sayhush. A microphone error or failed insertion is a later stage of the workflow. Check microphone access for capture and Accessibility for insertion. Conversely, a successful click on the app’s start control does not prove the keyboard shortcut is registered. Testing those paths separately makes a support report much more useful.

Keep pause and stop distinct

The keyboard shortcut finishes a tap-mode draft; it is not a pause key. Use the dock’s Pause/Resume control to think without inserting, and Stop to finish. Escape cancels. Once the new shortcut works in a note, test it in your usual editor and keep the same destination selected until insertion completes. Save an important draft in the editor rather than leaving it in a paused session.

Your quick checklist

  1. Finish the current recording.
  2. Choose tap or hold behavior in Settings.
  3. Select modifiers and Space, D, F8 or F9.
  4. Apply the shortcut and test in an empty note.
