Using dictation on a shared Mac: history, clipboard and account checks

By · Reviewed

On a shared Mac, check more than the dictation app: inserted text, local history, exports, the clipboard and account access can all remain available. Sayhush’s optional history is encrypted locally, but that does not make it private from someone using your unlocked macOS session.

Start with the macOS session

Use your own computer account where available and lock it when stepping away. A person using your unlocked session may be able to open apps and view documents you can view. Local encryption is not a substitute for controlling access to that session. Do not use a shared unlocked desktop for material that requires a stronger privacy boundary.

Understand Sayhush history controls

The History tab lets you turn off new saves, choose retention or clear saved entries. Turning Save history off does not remove existing entries. Retention options include 7 days, 30 days and until deleted, with a limit of 1,000 recent entries. These controls concern text stored by Sayhush on this Mac; they do not delete text already inserted elsewhere.

Treat exports as separate files

Export creates a text file in the location you choose. That file is separate from the encrypted history store. Clearing the app’s history does not remove an exported file, a synced copy or a backup. Before exporting on a shared machine, choose a location you understand and keep only the copies you need.

Remember the destination and clipboard

A draft may remain in a note, browser composer or email application after you close Sayhush. Copying a transcript also places text on the system clipboard, and another clipboard tool may retain it. Review those destinations separately. Do not assume a dictation-history setting controls another application’s storage or sync behavior.

Cloud recognition is a separate boundary

Sayhush requires online transcription. Keeping history locally does not mean microphone audio stays on the Mac during recognition. Read the privacy page before using it for material governed by an organization’s policy. This guide does not certify compliance with any professional or regulatory requirement.

Handover deliberately

Finish or cancel the recording, preserve only the text you need, and close private drafts. Review local history and exported copies according to your own retention needs. Sign out of service accounts when appropriate for the shared setup, then lock or end the macOS session. If the machine is not yours, avoid changing other people’s privacy settings or deleting their data.
