Choose the workflow before the price
There is no single best dictation app for every Mac user. Start with whether you need local processing, multiple devices, meeting notes, or simple text insertion. This comparison is written by the Sayhush team, based on official product pages reviewed on 29 October 2026. It is not an independent accuracy benchmark or hands-on test of every competitor.

| Your priority | Options to investigate | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional online Mac dictation | Sayhush | 30 free minutes/month; prepaid packs with no recurring subscription |
| Mac and other devices | Wispr Flow, Voicy, Willow | Exact device support and current plan limits |
| Local or offline transcription | Superwhisper, VoiceInk, Handy | Model downloads, hardware and optional cloud features |
| Dictation plus notes or meetings | Monologue | Which features and devices are included in the chosen plan |
Cloud dictation and broader platforms
Wispr Flow lists Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android support, a free tier, and Pro billing at $15 per user monthly or $12 per user per month on annual billing. Voicy lists desktop/mobile options, a 30-minute trial, an annual-view Pro price of $8.49 per month and a $260 lifetime offer. Confirm current terms before buying. These figures alone do not establish which tool costs least for your usage.
Local processing deserves a separate shortlist
Superwhisper advertises offline transcription and configurable modes. VoiceInk describes local speech models and an open-source product. Handy is free and open source, with on-device transcription and configurable shortcut behavior. If keeping audio off remote transcription servers is a requirement, investigate these options first. Sayhush requires a cloud connection; encrypted local text history does not make its transcription offline.
Newer comparison candidates
Monologue presents dictation and notes for Mac and iPhone, plus meeting notes and connections to AI tools. Willow advertises dictation for Mac, Windows and iPhone, with writing and role-specific use cases. We have not verified their checkout prices here. Inspect their current plans and test the exact features you need instead of relying on a stale comparison table.
Where Sayhush fits
Sayhush is a focused option for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or newer. Tap your shortcut to start and stop, pause from a bottom-centered dock, and keep optional encrypted history locally. The free allowance is 30 minutes per calendar month. Prepaid packs are $5 for 300 minutes and $12 for 1,000 minutes, without recurring billing or expiring paid credits.
A fair ten-minute evaluation
Use the same microphone, environment and short draft in each candidate. Include a name, a number and a correction, then count corrections you must make yourself. Test insertion in your actual editor. Check offline behavior only for products that claim it. Look at the permissions and data-processing policy. Choose based on the result, not a vendor’s claim to be several times faster or more accurate.
