Apple Dictation vs Sayhush: start with the built-in option

By · Reviewed

Try Apple Dictation first if you want the built-in Mac option without a separate dictation subscription. Consider Sayhush if its floating pause/resume dock, local transcript history and prepaid usage fit your writing. This comparison is written by the Sayhush team; it is not an independent performance test.

Check what your Mac already provides

Apple documents Dictation in System Settings → Keyboard. It supports entering text by voice, with language and regional availability varying. Apple also distinguishes Dictation from Voice Control: standard Dictation is not available while Voice Control is on. Check the settings on your own Mac rather than assuming every model, language and operating-system version behaves identically.

Look at the session controls you want

Sayhush defaults to tapping Control–Option–Space to start and tapping again to finish. Its bottom-centred dock offers Pause/Resume and Stop. A pause keeps the draft open; stopping inserts the combined result. If you prefer holding the shortcut, that mode remains available in Settings. These controls are the reason to trial the workflow, not evidence that recognition is better than Apple’s.

Separate processing from local history

Apple’s Dictation settings describe whether general text input is processed on-device for your configuration. Do not infer that every Apple Dictation language is offline. Sayhush requires an internet connection for cloud transcription. Its optional local text history is a separate storage feature and does not make recognition local. Check the actual processing requirement before using either option for sensitive work.

Compare the cost of your actual workload

Sayhush includes 30 free minutes per month, then offers $5 for 300 minutes or $12 for 1,000 minutes. Paid minutes do not expire. If the built-in feature already completes your tasks comfortably, an additional purchase may provide little value. If Sayhush’s controls reduce friction for your writing, use the free allowance to check that before buying more time.

Run the same small writing task

Use an ordinary paragraph with a name and a number, in the same editor and room. Check the final meaning, correction effort and where the text is inserted. Then try interrupting and continuing a draft. This is a suggested evaluation, not a reported test result. Do not choose a product from one ideal demo sentence or an unsupported accuracy percentage.

Choose for the supported environment

Sayhush currently requires an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later and internet access. Choose Apple’s built-in route when its supported configuration and controls meet your needs. Trial Sayhush when the pause/resume and history workflow is valuable enough to justify another app. Neither recommendation should be read as a guarantee for every text field or accessibility workflow.
