Dictation vs AI writing: what should happen to your words?

By · Reviewed

Dictation turns speech into text. AI writing can change wording or generate a draft from an instruction. An assistant action goes further by doing something in another service. Choose the behavior you want before comparing voice apps; these capabilities are not interchangeable.

A transcript starts with what you said

If you speak “The review is tomorrow,” the main job of dictation is to produce that message in text. Recognition still involves interpreting speech and punctuation, so a transcript is not guaranteed to preserve every detail perfectly. Review names, numbers and qualifications. The relevant question is how much correction you need before using it.

Cleanup makes editorial choices

Removing repeated words, smoothing grammar or changing punctuation can improve readability, but it can also change emphasis. An app may include some cleanup without becoming a general writing assistant. To evaluate it, speak a sentence with a deliberate qualification and verify that the qualification survives. Do not assume the shortest output is the most faithful.

Writing from an instruction is a different task

“Draft a polite reply declining the invitation” asks a model to compose words you did not speak. That can be useful, but the resulting details need review. A plain dictation tool may instead type the instruction itself. Check the product’s documented mode before relying on a command to produce a complete email.

Actions change something outside the draft

“Add a meeting tomorrow” is an action only if the system connects to a calendar and saves an event. A transcript of that sentence does not create the event. Dates, people, permissions and confirmations become part of the workflow. Sayhush’s current public release does not provide calendar actions, email sending or app automation.

Where Sayhush currently fits

Sayhush supplies personal microphone dictation into Mac text fields, with a pauseable recording dock and optional local text history. It requires internet for recognition. It does not offer a selected-text rewriting mode or instruction-to-email generator. You can dictate a prompt into another AI product yourself, but that product’s response and charges are separate.

Choose with two short samples

Try a factual sentence and an instruction in a disposable field. Observe whether the app transcribes, rewrites or acts, using only documented features. Then check the result against your intention. This distinguishes useful behavior from a feature label and prevents you from paying for a broader assistant when your real need is simply less typing.
